Scripture
Jesus said to him, “You believe because you see me. Great blessings belong to the people who believe without seeing me!”- John 20:29 (ERV)
Meditation
The story goes that a man slipped and fell off a cliff while hiking. Fortunately, he was able to grab a branch on the way down and, holding on for dear life, looked down to see a rock valley far below. When he looked up, he estimated it was about twenty feet to the cliff where he had fallen. He yelled, “Help! Help! Is anybody there?” A booming voice spoke up, “I am here, and I will save you if you believe in me.” Panicked yet hopeful, the man responded, “I believe! I believe!” The voice said, “If you believe me, then let go of the branch and then I will save you.” Hearing what the voice said, the man looked down, and then looked up again. Pulling himself up onto the branch, he shouted upward, “Is anybody else up there?”
Sound familiar? We initially believe, but when we don’t see God at work or feel His presence—or when what He asks us to do something that seems too dangerous—we search elsewhere for help. Yet today’s verse says “great blessings” await those who believe the Lord without having to see or feel. Where are you? On this day after Easter, renew your trust in God and His Word.
Prayer
Lord, help me to avail myself to Your Word and to Your presence in prayer. Then stimulate my faith in You and Your ability to rescue me. I rest in my knowledge of You. Amen.
